Holdings in the SPDR Gold Shares, the largest exchange-traded fund backed by gold, hit a new record near 1,040 tons Wednesday, according to latest data by the fund. Holdings rose 9.18 tons from the previous day to 1,038.17 tons, the SPDR reported on its Web site. On Wednesday's trading, the fund ended up 1.2% at $89.20.
