U.S. stocks turned positive on Thursday as a jump in oil prices lifted energy shares, more than offsetting unease about data showing a worsening labor market.

The Dow Jones industrial average .DJI gained 42.29 points, or 0.61 percent, to 6,972.69. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index .SPX rose 5.66 points, or 0.78 percent, to 727.02.
