CH: Sensex goes past 9,000 twice, ends 113 points higher

Mumbai, Mar 18 After going past the psychological level of 9,000 twice, the Bombay Stock Exchange benchmark Sensex today rolled back on re-emergence of profit-selling but still ended higher by nearly 113 points at 8,976.68.
In volatile trading, the key index moved between 9,120.46 and 8,951.32 points.

Bourses regained strength following a strong Wall Street rally yesterday and better trends in other Asian stocks markets. The US Dow Jones Average index gained 2.5 per cent.

The wide-based National Stock Exchange index Nifty rose by 37.25 points to 2,794.70. It moved between 2,836.05 and 2,752.25 points during the day.

Reliance Industries, which has nearly 12 per cent weight in the Sensex, surged by Rs 30.95 at Rs 1,331.30 on reports that one of its oil wells resumed production.

The market received maximum support from stocks in realty, metal, capital goods and banking. The realty index gained the most, by 7.65 per cent, to 1,584.05 on surprisingly strong US housing data for February and easing concerns over world financial markets.

The metal sector index was the second-best performer, gaining 3.47 per cent to 5,146.58 on emergence of buying in segment majors like Hindustan Zinc, Tata Steel, Sterlite Industries and SAIL, after reports of base metal prices surged at the London Metal Exchange. (Agencies)
