The Sensex ended higher on persistent buying seen in realty, oil & gas and metal shares. It opened flat, with a loss of 28.74 points, at 9,442.30 on Wednesday on mixed global cues. Later, it turned choppy amid lackluster trade, touching a low of 9,430.45.
However, the index gained strength on buying interest seen in frontliners, touching a high of 9,706.47 to close on a firm note.
BSE Midcap and Smallcap index rose 0.75% and 0.32% respectively.
Amongst the sectoral indices, BSE Realty index soared 6.32%, Oil & gas surged 3.66%, Metal gained 2.55%, Bankex rose 3.31%, while PSU dropped 0.01%.
European stocks fell, amid speculation reports on durable-goods orders and housing will show the American recession is deepening. FTSE 100 down 20.39 points, or 0.52%, to trade at 3,891.07, CAC 40 declined 6 points, or 0.21%, to trade at 2,868.39 and DAX dropped 11.71 points, or 0.28%, to trade at 4,175.65. (4.05 p.m., IST)
