MW: Dollar stays up after jobless, orders data

The U.S. dollar remained higher against most of its major rivals Thursday after a pair of government reports said the number of people collecting jobless benefits rose to a record and durable-goods orders rose more than predicted last month. The dollar index, a measure of the greenback against a trade-weighted basket of six major currencies, traded at 80.764, up from 80.413 in North American trade late Wednesday. The dollar was higher before the reports as currency markets awaited further data on the U.S. housing market and weighed the impact of the recent rise in government-bond yields.
