The Sensex ended the day with a loss of 69.66 points, or 0.45% at 15,397.15 after touching a high of 15,568.74 and a low of 15,240.73. The broad-based NSE Nifty fell 29.75 points, or 0.64% at 4,625.50 after hitting a high of 4,679.55 and a low of 4,586.15.
Major gainers in the 30-share index were Hindalco Industries (6.86%), Mahindra & Mahindra (6.79%), Sterlite Industries (India) (5.33%), HDFC Bank (3.47%), Tata Steel (2.71%), and NTPC (2.19%).
On the other hand, Jaiprakash Associates (4.27%), Oil & Natural Gas Corporation (4.09%), ACC (4.05%), State Bank Of India (3.74%), Bharat Heavy Electricals (3.39%), and Infosys Technologies (2.84%) were the major losers in the Sensex.
Overall market breadth was negative. Out of the total 2,792 stocks traded at BSE, 945 advanced, 1,789 declined while 58 remained unchanged.
