RTTN: Dollar soars to 3-day high against Japanese yen
(RTTNews) - The US dollar extended its recent gains against the Japanese yen in early New York trading on Thursday. The greenback advanced to a 3-day high of 98.58 against the yen around 8:30 am ET. The dollar-yen pair is presently trading at 98.28, compared to yesterday's close of 98.13.
The greenback gained after data showing that retail sales rose 0.5 percent in May following a revised 0.2 percent decrease in April. This was in line with analysts expectations and up from the 0.4 percent decrease originally reported for the previous month.
Meanwhile, the U.S. Labor Department revealed that initial jobless claims, a closely-watched gauge of layoffs, came in at 601,000 for the week ended at June 6th. This was down 24,000 from the previous week's revised level of 625,000.
