LONDON (MarketWatch) -- European shares rose in early trading on Monday, with the mining sector advancing as Xstrata (UK:XTA 707.30, +18.10, +2.62%) shares rose 3.1% and Rio Tinto (UK:RIO 2,200, +64.50, +2.99%) shares climbed 2.9%. Banks were also firm, with U.K. lender Lloyds Banking Group (UK:LLOY 69.99, +2.49, +3.69%) trading up 3.6% after a report out over the weekend that it could post a profit when it reports results this week. The U.K. FTSE 100 index advanced 0.5% to 4,410.49, the German DAX index rose 1% to 5,029.33 and the French CAC-40 index climbed 0.7% to 3,241.41.
