FX: Futures Mixed in Quiet Session; Commodities Rise

There's No Business Like FOX Business

Stock futures were mixed Friday morning as Wall Street prepares for what might be a ninth-straight day of gains for stocks. Today is quadruple-witching, which may cause heavy trading as stocks and futures all expire at the end of trading today.

As of 7 a.m. in New York, the Dow Jones Industrial Average futures rose 9 points, or 0.08%, to 10726, the S&P 500 futures rose 0.8 points to 1162.10 and the Nasdaq 100 futures fell 0.25 points to 1941.50.

Outside of quadruple witching, which is expiration of four types of heavily-traded securities all in one day, it's a sparse day for data and corporate news that may move the market. Quadruple witching only occurs four times a year and usually leads to higher-than-average trading and volatility, especially near the end of the session.

European stocks were modestly higher despite developments that it appears that Greece will have to turn to the International Monetary Fund for help instead of its European Union partners. There are deep divisions among the continent's most influential members, with France willing to help but Germany expressing hesitancy.

The euro fell 0.3% against the dollar overnight on the developments, causing commodities to fall as well. Oil was down 0.7% to $81.65 a barrel and gold was lower by 0.55% to $1121.30 a troy ounce. Copper futures were however higher by 0.4%.

Shares of portable device maker Palm (PALM) plunged 15% in the pre-market session after the company report a weak fourth-quarter sales forecast, causing several analysts to downgrade the stock as a result.

On Thursday, the Dow rose 45.50 points, or 0.42%, to 10779.17, the Standard & Poor's 500 sank 0.38 points, or 0.03%, to 1165.83 and the Nasdaq Composite gained 2.19 points, or 0.09%, to 2391.28. The FOX 50 added 2.05 points, or 0.24%, to 843.84.
