FX: Dollar mixed versus most rivals amid Greece woes

Forex Pros – The U.S. dollar was mixed against other major currencies on Monday, as European leaders remained divided on whether their nations should provide debt-laden Greece with financial aid.

The greenback was slightly up against the euro, with EUR/USD shedding 0.06% to hit 1.3523, after German Chancellor Angela Merkel called on Athens to solve its debt problems alone and Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi spoke strongly in favor of European Union support for Greece.

The dollar also rose against the pound, with GBP/USD slipping 0.28% to hit 1.4972. In addition, it was up against its Australian and Kiwi counterparts, with AUD/USD dropping 0.36% to hit 0.9121 and NZD/USD falling 0.39% to reach 0.7056.

But the greenback was down against the Swiss franc, the loonie and the yen: USD/CHF fell 0.18% to hit 1.0595, USD/CAD slipped 0.08% to reach 1.0163 and USD/JPY slid 0.02% to reach 90.53.

The dollar index, which tracks the performance of the greenback versus a basket of six other major currencies, was up 0.17%.

Later in the day, the European Central Bank president, Jean-Claude Trichet, was set to testify before the Economic and Monetary Affairs Committee of the European Parliament in Brussels.

On Thursday, the EU's 27 heads of government are due to meet in Brussels for a summit. Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou has said that during the talks, he will push for a clear-cut statement on how the EU would help his country if it were to request financial assistance.
