MW: Energy stocks slip with broad market, weak crude

SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- Energy stocks fell at the open Tuesday, weighed down by lower crude oil prices and modest losses across the broader stock market. The NYSE Arca Oil Index (XOI 1,123, -3.35, -0.30%) was off 0.6% at 1,119 points in early trades. BP Plc's (BP 56.92, -0.99, -1.71%) led percentage decliners in the group with a 2.2% drop to $56.65 a share after reporting first-quarter earnings. The NYSE Arca Natural Gas Index (XNG 576.84, -2.19, -0.38%) was off 0.8% at 574.5 points with 14 of its 15 components in the red. The Philadelphia Oil Service Sector Index (OSX 224.41, -2.88, -1.27%) was off 1.3% at 224.4 points. June crude oil futures on the New York Mercantile Exchange were off 72 cents at $83.48 a barrel.
