MW: U.S. stocks open slightly lower ahead of Fed

By Nick Godt
NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- U.S. stocks opened down slightly on Wednesday, with legal uncertainty weighing on the energy sector, while investors awaited data on housing and the Federal Reserve's decision on interest rates. The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA 10,285, -8.08, -0.08%) fell 10.96 points, or 0.1%, to 10,282.56. The S&P 500 index (SPX 1,093, -2.64, -0.24%) fell 1.24 points, or 0.1%, to 1,094.07, with the energy sector once again weighing on the broad index. Legal uncertainty is weighing on the industry after a Federal judge on Tuesday struck down the Obama administration's moratorium on deepwater drilling, imposed after the Gulf oil spill disaster. The Nasdaq Composite (COMP 2,253, -8.36, -0.37%) fell 4.50 points, or 0.3%, to 2,257.30.
