Prices at local gasoline pumps spiked about 6 cents a gallon over the past week, continuing June's upward trend.
Price increases the previous two weeks were 2 cents and 3 cents, respectively.
The average retail price of gasoline in Sacramento was $3.09 a gallon, according to data released Monday by SactoGasPrices.com, a GasBuddy.com website.
Nationally, the average price was $2.74 a gallon – up about a penny from last week.
Energy analysts said they expect a steady, slow climb of prices through July 4. They said the climb likely will be tempered by two factors: tepid demand for gasoline nationwide and a narrow range of trading on crude oil.
Benchmark crude oil for July delivery fell nearly a dollar to less than $78 a barrel in trading Monday on the New York Mercantile Exchange.
