LOS ANGELES (MarketWatch) -- Japanese shares rose in opening trade Monday despite a weak lead from the U.S., with techs among the leading advancers. In early morning moves, the Nikkei Stock Average rose 0.5% to 9,249.5, while the Topix gained 0.6% to 835.9. Elpida Memory Inc. (JP:6665 1,290, -36.00, -2.71%) (ELPDF 17.45, -0.70, -3.86%) added 3.9%, and Sanyo Electric Co. (JP:6764 114.00, +2.00, +1.79%) (SANYF 1.35, -0.05, -3.57%) gained 2.6%, while shares of Sony Corp. (JP:6758 2,310, +14.00, +0.61%) (SNE 26.36, +0.02, +0.08%) advanced 1.8% after Credit Suisse initiated coverage of the stock at outperform, according to Dow Jones Newswires. Nissan Motor Co. (JP:7201 607.00, +1.00, +0.17%) (NSANY 13.76, +0.04, +0.29%) gained 1.2%, despite a report it plans to recall over 1,000 vehicles in South Korea. |
