BLBG: Sugar Declines in London on Global Surplus Forecast, Supplies

By Alistair Holloway

Aug. 26 (Bloomberg) -- White sugar retreated in London after global production of the sweetener was forecast to exceed demand in the 2010-11 season and as crops are set to boost supplies.

The surplus in the 2010-11 season will be 3.2 million metric tons, compared with a shortage of 4.9 million tons a year earlier, the International Sugar Organization said yesterday. The forecast was its first assessment for the season.

“White refined sugar from Europe and north Brazil will start to be available soon, from October onwards,” Naim Beydoun, a broker and analyst at Rolle, Switzerland-based Swiss Sugar Brokers, said today in an e-mail.

White, or refined, sugar for October delivery declined $9.40, or 1.6 percent, to $577.50 a metric ton on NYSE Liffe at 10:52 a.m. London time. Raw sugar for October delivery slid 0.12 of a cent, or 0.6 percent, to 19.91 cents a pound on ICE Futures U.S. in New York. Refined sugar, traded in London, has retreated 19 percent this year.
