MW: Dollar trims loss vs. yen as jobless claims fall
By William L. Watts
LONDON (MarketWatch) -- The U.S. dollar temporarily extended a small loss versus the euro but erased a decline versus the Japanese yen Thursday after weekly initial jobless claims declined by a larger-than-expected 31,000 to total 473,000 in the latest week. The euro (EURUSD 1.2667, +0.0007, +0.0553%) traded at $1.2664, virtually flat versus the greenback after initially edging higher in the wake of the data. The dollar traded at 84.64 yen (USDYEN 84.6600, +0.0800, +0.0946%) , little changed from the previous day. U.S. stock index futures extended a gain in the wake of the data. The dollar and the yen both tend to lose ground when risk appetite is on the rise.
