NEW YORK, Sept. 16 (UPI) -- U.S. markets fell early Thursday, despite the Labor Department reporting 3,000 fewer first-time jobless claims were filed in the week ending Sept. 11.
It was a marginal drop in a total figure of 450,000 claims filed, but it was the second consecutive week claims fell. In the previous week, first-time claims fell by 27,000.
In midmorning trading, following market declines in Asia and Europe, the Dow Jones industrial average lost 2478 points, 0.23 percent, to 10,547.95. The Standard & Poor's 500 index lost 0.4 percent, 4.48, to 1,120.59. The Nasdaq composite index lost 0.26 percent, 5.89, to 2,295.43.
The benchmark 10-year Treasury note rose 2/32 to yield 2.715 percent.
The euro rose to $1.3095 from Wednesday's $1.3012. Against the yen, the dollar rose to 85.67 yen from Wednesday's 85.59 yen.
In Japan, the Nikkei 225 index dropped 0.07 percent, 7.06, to 9,509.50.
