BLBG:South Africa Daybook: AngloGold Ashanti Earnings, Salary Talks, Liberty
 
AngloGold Ashanti Ltd. (ANG), the world’s third-largest gold producer, releases second-quarter earnings at 8 a.m. in Johannesburg.
So-called underlying earnings are expected to be $0.63 a share, according to a median estimate of 6 analysts surveyed by Bloomberg.
Workers at the company reached an agreement on wages on Aug. 2, ending a strike that halted production on July 28.
WHAT TO WATCH:
* The National Union of Mineworkers held wage talks late
yesterday with Impala Platinum Ltd. Eskom Holdings SOC Ltd.,
the electricity utility, and trade unions are expected to
conclude pay talks today.
* The South African Chamber of Commerce and Industry holds a
debate on nationalization from 9 a.m. after the ruling African
National Congress’ youth wing called for mines and banks to be
nationalized.
* Greenpeace will hand over a report to the department of energy
on the cost of nuclear power to South Africa at 10 a.m.
* Statistics South Africa releases electricity production and
consumption data for June at 1 p.m.
* South Africa’s Reserve Bank is scheduled to release an
invitation for a weekly government Treasury-bill auction that
will be held tomorrow.

MARKETS:
* The rand strengthened 0.3 percent to 6.7439 per dollar
yesterday in Johannesburg.
* The FTSE/JSE Africa All-Share Index declined 1.1 percent to
30,520.43 yesterday.
* The yield on the 13.5 percent government bond due September
2015, known to traders as the R157, fell 9 basis points
to 7.13 percent late yesterday.

EQUITY MOVERS:
* African Bank Investments Ltd. (ABL SJ): The financial-services
provider gives its third-quarter business update at 8 a.m.
* Investec Ltd. (INL SJ): The private bank and wealth manager
with operations in South Africa, Australia and the U.K. holds
its annual general meeting at 12 p.m.
* Liberty Holdings Ltd. (LBH SJ): The investment holding
company, which owns a controlling stake in Liberty Group Ltd.,
is expected to release first-half earnings at 7 a.m.
* Sappi Ltd. (SAP SJ): The world’s biggest maker of glossy paper
gives third-quarter earnings at 9 a.m.
* Trans Hex Group Ltd. (TSX SJ): Africa’s biggest publicly
traded diamond producer holds its annual general meeting from 10
a.m.
* Vodacom Group Ltd. (VOD SJ): The largest provider of wireless
services to South Africans holds an annual general meeting at 11
a.m.
