LONDON (MarketWatch) -- European stocks slumped in early trading Friday, extending a global selloff amid mounting worries over economic growth and high levels of sovereign debt. Losses were led by Royal Bank of Scotland Group PLC UK:RBS -11.39% , which tumbled 21% after the group said it swung to a second-quarter loss that included hefty provisions on its Greek sovereign debt holdings. Among the main European indexes, the Stoxx Europe 600 index XX:SXXP -2.16% dropped 3% to 235.98, the U.K. FTSE 100 index UK:UKX -1.70% sank 2.9% to 5,234.14, the French CAC 40 index FR:PX1 -1.48% dropped 2.2% to 3,246.00 and the German DAX 30 index DX:DAX -2.36% slumped 3.6% to 6,187.00.
