SB: Dollar gains strength after Bernanke speech

NEW YORK -- The dollar is rising against some major currencies after Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke hinted that Congress may need to act to stimulate hiring and growth.

But he didn't announce any new measures to support the economy that would weigh on the U.S currency, reversing some of the dollar's earlier slide.

Bernanke spoke at an annual economics conference in Jackson Hole, Wyo. Friday.

The Fed Chairman said record-low interest rates will eventually spur growth, but that the economy needs more help in the short term.

In morning trading Friday, the euro fell to $1.4365 from $1.4368 late Thursday. The British pound fell to $1.6248 from $1.6281. The dollar fell to 76.71 Japanese yen from 77.55 yen and fell to 0.7934 Swiss franc from 0.7939 Swiss franc.
