NEW YORK, Oct. 6 (UPI) -- U.S. markets opened with losses Thursday morning, failing to catch the updraft from an upturn in Asia and Europe.
The Hang Seng index in Hong Kong surged 5.67 percent, while Australia's S&P/ASX index jumped 3.65 percent.
In Europe, in midday trading, stocks were up in Germany, France, Italy and Britain with bank stocks leading the pack on reports of European leaders contemplating recapitalization of European banks.
The European Central Bank on Thursday kept its key lending rate at 1.5 percent. The Bank of England also left its overnight lending rate unchanged at 0.5 percent.
In midmorning trading on Wall Street, the Dow Jones industrial average shed 58.13 points, 0.53 percent, to 10,881.82. The Standard & Poor's 500 index lost 6.56 points, 0.57 percent, to 1,137.48. The Nasdaq composite index shed 9.27 points, 0.38 percent to 2,451.24.
The benchmark 10-year treasury note fell 12/32 to yield 1.934 percent.
The euro fell to $1.3333 from Wednesday's $1.3348. Against the yen, the dollar fell to 76.71 yen from Wednesday's 76.79 yen.
In Tokyo, the Nikkei 225 index added 1.66 percent, 139.04 points, to 8,522.02.
