MW: U.S. stock indexes begin new week with solid gains

By Kate Gibson
NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- U.S. stocks opened higher Monday as Europe planned to leverage a regional rescue fund and evidence U.S. holiday sales got off to a record start. "More consumers than ever turned out for retailers' Black Friday promotions, a promising sign for the economic recovery," Matthew Shay, the president and chief executive of the National Retail Rederation, said Sunday in a statement. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA +2.56% added 266.41 points to 11,498.19. The S&P 500 Index SPX +3.02% climbed 33.07 pints to 1,191.92. The Nasdaq Composite Index COMP +3.27% rose 76.98 points to 2,518.49.
