MW: U.S. stocks tally small gains after mixed data

NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- U.S. stocks on Thursday struggled for mild gains after the prior day’s rally, after mixed economic data including a rise in U.S. initial jobless claims above 400,000 last week.
A gauge of manufacturing illustrated better-than-expected improvement in November.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA -0.06% climbed 6.06 points to 12,051.74.
The S&P 500 Index SPX +0.14% added 3.63 points to 1,250.59.
The Nasdaq Composite Index COMP +0.41% rose 14.57 points to 2,634.91.
Advancers ran ahead of decliners by a 3-to-2 ratio on the New York Stock Exchange, where 121 million shares traded as of 10 a.m. Eastern.
