SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- The U.S. dollar index edged lower Friday and the euro climbed after European Union leaders agreed to closer fiscal ties among other measures to tackle the region's debt crisis. "As with other meetings, this one hasn't solved everything and likely will leave some disappointed, but overall has been taken by the markets as a big step in the right direction," said Colin Cieszynski, CMC Markets analyst, in a note. The dollar index DXY -0.13% , which tracks the greenback against a basket of six rivals, fell to 78.703 from 78.789 in North American trade late Thursday. The euro EURUSD +0.19% bought $1.3368, up from $1.3347 late Thursday.
