TH: Dollar trades in narrow ranges ahead of EU meeting
NEW YORK — The dollar was little changed against most other major currencies ahead of a telephone conference of European Union finance ministers. News that North Korea ruler Kim Jong Il had died initially pushed the yen lower against the dollar, but it has since recovered.The finance ministers are holding a telephone conference Monday to decide how to split up $261 billion European leaders promised to give the International Monetary Fund at a summit earlier this month. The money is meant to boost the eurozone's firewall against Europe's growing debt crisis.The euro was trading at 1.3024 in morning trading Monday, unchanged from late Friday.The dollar slipped to 77.84 Japanese yen from 77.87 Japanese yen.
