WSJ:20 back home in NY after natural gas line ruptures

Associated Press

WAPPINGER, N.Y. — About 20 people are back in their homes and businesses in the Mid-Hudson Valley after being evacuated when a natural gas line ruptured while a utility crew was working on it.

State police say the DOT crew was installing a culvert drain pipe along Route 9D late Thursday morning in the Dutchess County town of Wappinger when they uncovered a an older natural gas line that hadn't been marked.

DOT contacted Central Hudson Gas and Electric, which dispatched a crew to the scene. The crew discovered the line was still active when natural gas was released. When they attempted to close the valve, it shattered and was blown off the gas line.

Nearby homes and businesses were evacuated. They were allowed to return about an hour later.
