MW: Gold edges higher, trades at $1,712.20 an ounce

SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- Gold futures veered between small gains and losses Thursday, trying to recoup at least a fraction of the previous session's steep losses. Gold for April delivery GCJ2 +0.02% added 60 cents, or less than 0.1%, to $1,712.20 an ounce on the Comex division of the New York Mercantile Exchange. Futures had spent Asian and European trading hours in the red, and traded as low as $1,695.10 an ounce.
