MW: Europe stocks off after U.S. consumer confidence

LONDON (MarketWatch) -- Most European stock markets turned lower Tuesday after a gauge of U.S. consumer confidence declined more than expected in March. The Conference Board's consumer confidence index slipped to 70.2 from a February reading of 71.6, and below analysts' expectations of a 71.5 reading. The Stoxx Europe 600 index XX:SXXP -0.35% fell 0.3% to 267.24, after trading in tight ranges before the U.S. data. The French CAC 40 index FR:PX1 -0.88% lost 0.8% to 3,473.71, while the U.K. FTSE 100 index UK:UKX -0.48% traded 0.5% lower at 5,875.85. The German DAX 30 index DX:DAX +0.01% was 0.2% higher at 4,006.55.
