MW: Total jobless claims fall as household debt slides
Jobless claims trend down
The total number of people receiving unemployment-insurance benefits through state and federal programs recently fell below 6 million for the first time since late 2008, the U.S. Labor Department reported this week. The government also reported that those filing initial claims for regular state benefits fell 12,000 to a seasonally adjusted 377,000. Analysts use claims levels to estimate whether layoffs are rising or falling.
