MW:Euro, Spanish bonds jump after Draghi pledge

By William L. Watts
FRANKFURT (MarketWatch) -- The euro jumped sharply higher versus the dollar Thursday and Spanish government bonds rallied, pulling yields down sharply, after European Central Bank President Mario Draghi vowed the institution would take any necessary steps to save the shared currency. The euro EURUSD +0.90% soared to $1.2287 versus the dollar, up from $1.2152 in North American trade late Wednesday. The yield on the 10-year Spanish government bond ES:10YR_ESP -4.06% fell 0.28 percentage point to 7.04%. Draghi, speaking at an investor conference in London, said the ECB was ready to "do whatever it takes to preserve the euro," news reports said.
