NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- The U.S. dollar extended gains on Wednesday after data showed that private-sector payrolls rose by 163,000 in July. The dollar index DXY +0.01% , which tracks the performance of the greenback against a basket of other major currencies, traded at 82.753 compared with 82.676 before the data and 82.619 in late North American trading Tuesday. The euro slipped to $1.2284 compared with $1.2303 before the jobs data.
