WT: Gas prices rise nationwide, following Michigan's lead

UNDATED (WKZO) -- Gas prices spiked again this weekend, after falling during the week they bounced back up to near $4 a gallon.

The experts have it narrowed down to more expensive summer blends, rising crude oil prices, refinery problems, tensions in Syria and Iran, and the looming possibility of ethanol shortages due to the poor corn harvest, or some combination of those. Right now the average price in Michigan is $3.98.

The experts say prices should fall in the Midwest once the refinery repairs are made. They also expect them to fall after Labor Day, when the summer blends are no longer required and summer travel ends, just as long as there are no hurricanes whipping up trouble in the gulf.

The Midwest may have some of the highest gas prices in the country, we aren’t the only ones experiencing higher prices. National Pollster Trilby Lundberg says it’s a national phenomenon, due primarily to rising crude oil prices.

She experienced her largest two week increase of the year at 18-cents, bringing the average up to $3.69 a gallon.

She says gas prices are up 8-cents from this time last year, but down 28-cents from just a few months ago.
