MW: 30-year-mortgage rate decreases to 3.55%

By Ruth Mantell
WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) -- The 30-year fixed-rate mortgage average fell to 3.55% in the week ending Sept. 6 from 3.59% in the prior week, Freddie Mac said Thursday in its weekly report. The rate was 4.12% a year earlier, according to Freddie, a buyer of residential mortgages. "Mortgage rates were little changed over the holiday week amid mixed economic data releases," said Frank Nothaft, chief economist. Meanwhile, the 15-year fixed-rate mortgage remained at 2.86% in the latest week. The average rate on the 5-year Treasury-indexed hybrid adjustable-rate mortgage declined to 2.75% from 2.78%. The 1-year Treasury-indexed ARM decreased to 2.61% from 2.63%.
