MW:Bernanke, India central bankers talk world economy

By Nupur Acharya
MUMBAI--U.S. Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke, who is on a visit to India, Wednesday said he has discussed several key issues -- including monetary and regulatory policies, banking and the state of the global economy -- with officials from the country's central bank.

"India is clearly becoming a more and more important player on the world stage... it is very useful for us to exchange ideas and to build the basis for future collaboration and coordination," said Mr. Bernanke, the first serving Fed chairman to visit the Reserve Bank of India.

Mr. Bernanke and U.S. Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner, who are on a two-day trip to India, met with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh as well as Finance Minister P. Chidamabaram in New Delhi Tuesday.

Their visit comes as India last month took steps to cut government spending and allow more foreign investments in an effort to boost economic growth and revive investor confidence in Asia's third-largest economy.
