The rupee today lost 9 paise against the dollar to touch 54.46 in early trades due to appreciation of the American currency.
The Indian unit opened weaker at 54.43 from Tuesday’s close of 54.37 on the Interbank Foreign Exchange market. The forex market was closed yesterday for Holi festival.
However, the rupee recovered to 54.33 in the afternoon trade around 1.25 p.m. as the dollar started weakening against the yen.
Increased month-end demand for the dollar from importers and weaker domestic equity markets has also put pressure on the rupee.
