MW: U.S. stocks tally mild decline as data disappoint

NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- U.S. stocks started mostly lower on Wednesday, retreating a day after another record-setting rally, as economic reports included an unexpected contraction in New York-area manufacturing. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA -0.15% was down 23.27 points at 15,191.98. The S&P 500 index SPX -0.10% shed 1.16 points to 1,649.18. The Nasdaq Composite COMP -0.01% gained 2.26 points to 3,464.86.
