Inflation in the 17-nation eurozone fell sharply to 1.3 per cent in August from 1.6 per cent in July, according to a first estimate by the Eurostat data agency.
The prices of food, drink and tobacco products showed the biggest increase of 3.3 per cent against 3.5 per cent in July, with energy registering the sharpest drop of 0.4 per cent after rising 1.6 per cent in July.
August consumer prices fell 0.3 per cent compared with July when there dropped 0.5 per cent from June.
Eurozone inflation hit a 38-month low of 1.2 per cent in April but has picked up as the economy has recovered from a record 18-month recession.
