BT:Ringgit closes flat against US dollar

The ringgit closed flat against the US dollar as investors remained on the sidelines due to uncertain external economic
environment.

At 5pm, the local unit was quoted at 3.2745/2775 against the greenback, unchanged from yesterday.

A dealer said the ringgit, which started the day's trading on a weaker note at 3.2770/2800, recovered as the country's November factory output rose more than expected.

According to a report by the Statistics Department, Malaysia's November 2013 manufacturing sector recorded a 4.4 per cent growth in sales to RM53.2 billion from RM50.9 billion in November 2012, due to higher sales in 72 of the 116 industries surveyed.

"However, investors were cautious as emerging Asian currencies are likely to stay under pressure as a solid US recovery is expected to allow the Federal Reserve to keep scaling back its bond-buying programme," the dealer added.

The ringgit, which was traded within the range of 3.2729 and 3.2838 today, was little changed against the Singapore dollar at 2.5749/5791 compared with 2.5749/5777 on Wednesday.

However, the local unit was lower against the yen to 3.1212/1256 from yesterday's 3.1168/1211, weakened against the British pound to 5.3882/3948 from 5.3784/3846 yesterday and fell marginally against the euro to 4.4559/4603 from 4.4553/4607 previously.-- Bernama
