MW: ECB's Nouy: Fewer banks subject to stress tests

FRANKFURT--Europe's banks will face another round of stress tests next year, but they won't involve as many institutions as the previous round, said the eurozone's chief banking supervisor, Danièle Nouy.

"We will have another stress test next year in 2016 that will be done with [the European Banking Authority]," Ms. Nouy said in an interview aired Thursday.

"There will be [fewer] banks," she told Finnish broadcaster YLE. She estimated that the next round would include about 50 or 60 banks, compared with the approximately 120 included in the tests done last year. Those were carried out ahead of the ECB taking on the role of Europe's bank supervisor.

Asked about the timing of the test, Ms. Nouy said, "It's a bit premature to tell, because we will be part of a bigger European exercise with EBA."

She said that "discussions are starting right now on the exact time frame, exact number of banks and the characteristics of the exercise. You will know more in a few months, a couple of months, I guess," she said.
